This is a trek suitable for adventurous people looking to enjoy beautiful mountains accentuated with an insight into unspoiled terrain. The Lemosho traverse is possibly the very best ‘circuit’ trek. The trail circumnavigates the highest free-standing peak in Africa.
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Elevation: 7,742 ft to 9,498 ft
Distance: 6 km | 4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After a scenic 4-hour drive from Arusha, we arrive at Lemosho Gate to complete entry formalities. We then embark on a trek through an untouched rainforest, where your adventure truly begins, leading us to Mti Mkubwa, or “Big Tree Camp.” This forested section teems with unique flora and fauna, offering an immersive start to the climb.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 9,498 ft to 11,500 ft
Distance: 8 km | 5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Heath
We leave the dense rainforest, transitioning to the Shira Plateau’s open landscapes. The trail passes through savannah-like terrain with tall grasses, volcanic rocks, and lichen-draped heather. Today’s route leads to Shira Ridge, offering breathtaking views of Kibo across the plateau before reaching Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut
Elevation: 11,500 ft to 13,800 ft
Distance: 11 km | 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Heath
We explore the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus globally, before veering towards Moir Hut. This campsite, set at the base of Lent Hills, is ideal for acclimatization, with optional hikes around the area offering spectacular vistas and a valuable chance to adjust to the altitude.
Day 4: Moir Hut via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation Gain: 13,800 ft to 15,190 ft
Elevation Loss: 15,190 ft to 13,044 ft
Total Distance: 10 km | 6 miles
Total Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s route ascends through volcanic landscapes to the towering Lava Tower (300 ft), a prime acclimatization point. Descending through the Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp, we benefit from the high-altitude exposure of the day, crucial for summit success.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
Distance: 5 km | 3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Starting with the iconic Barranco Wall, we ascend nearly 900 feet on this non-technical yet thrilling climb. We navigate a series of valleys and hills, finally descending into Karanga Valley, where a final ascent brings us to camp. This shorter day further aids in acclimatization.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
Distance: 4 km | 2 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Continuing upwards, we reach the Southern Circuit junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. From Barafu Camp, you can view the majestic twin peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. We rest and enjoy an early dinner, preparing for the summit attempt early the next day.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation Gain: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft
Elevation Loss: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft
Total Distance: 17 km | 10 miles
Total Hiking Time: 10-14 hours

Around midnight, we begin the final ascent. This section is physically and mentally challenging due to the extreme cold and altitude. The reward is an unforgettable sunrise near Stella Point (18,900 ft), with views over Mawenzi. Shortly after, we reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After taking in the summit’s awe-inspiring views, we descend to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The descent is steep and can be tough on the knees—poles are recommended.

Elevation: 10,065 ft to 6,000 ft
Distance: 10 km | 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
